Renowned Nigerian human rights advocate, Harrison Gwamnishu, has brought to public attention the troubling case of a young widow who is reportedly being targeted by her late husband’s family and now faces possible imprisonment under contentious circumstances.
In a detailed Facebook post, Harrison explained that the woman in question recently lost her husband, who was a vigilante security officer. He was reportedly shot during duty and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Tragically, instead of receiving support and sympathy, the widow found herself accused of being complicit in his death. Her in-laws, seemingly driven by suspicion or other motives, pointed fingers at her and managed to have her detained by the authorities. The widow, along with a close female friend, was held in police custody for seven days pending investigation.
However, an autopsy conducted on the deceased confirmed that the husband died as a result of gunshot wounds sustained during his vigilante duty, and there was no evidence linking the widow to the fatal incident. Despite being cleared of the initial allegations, the ordeal did not end there for the grieving woman.
According to Gwamnishu, the widow was subsequently evicted from her husband’s house by the same in-laws. Following this, a new lawsuit was filed against her, accusing her of burglary and theft—charges which many, including the activist, believe to be retaliatory and unjust.
Harrison Gwamnishu expressed his concern over what he described as a clear case of victimization, calling on the authorities and the public to ensure justice is served and that the young widow is not further traumatized by a legal system being manipulated against her.
He continues to use his platform to raise awareness and seek intervention from relevant legal and civil rights organizations to stop the persecution of the innocent woman.
