The US Embassy has officially announced the temporary closure of its branches in both Abuja and Lagos on July 4, 2025, in observance of the United States' Independence Day celebration.
This annual holiday, widely celebrated across the United States, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. On this day, the Continental Congress formally declared the 13 American colonies free and independent from British rule, a pivotal moment in American history that symbolizes freedom and national pride.
As a result of the holiday, the temporary closure will affect all routine consular services offered at both the embassy in Abuja and the consulate in Lagos. Services such as visa application processing, passport issuance, notarial services, and other routine appointments will not be available on this date.
Despite the suspension of regular operations, the embassy has assured the public that emergency services will remain available during the holiday closure. US citizens in need of urgent assistance can still reach out to the embassy and consulate through the designated emergency contact channels provided on their official website and communication platforms.
According to the embassy, normal activities and full consular operations are expected to resume on Monday, July 7, 2025. Members of the public who had scheduled appointments during the closure period are advised to check their emails and embassy updates for rescheduling information or further instructions.
The embassy expressed appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of applicants and the general public during the brief closure and extended warm wishes to all Americans in Nigeria and around the world celebrating the 249th anniversary of US independence.
