The Department of Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has officially addressed and debunked the viral rumors linking one of its students, Ifeme Rebecca Yahoma, popularly known as Becky, to a false relationship narrative following her much-talked-about outing with renowned YouTuber and content creator, Asherkine.
This clarification comes in response to a recent visit by Asherkine to UNN, where he took Becky on a luxurious outing. During this special treat, he surprised her with an extravagant shopping spree, gifted her a brand new phone, and showered her with other expensive items reportedly worth millions of naira.
Before their outing began, Asherkine had asked Becky directly whether she was in a romantic relationship. Becky confidently and clearly stated that she was single and had never been in a relationship before. Her honest response was captured in a video that quickly went viral, sparking admiration from fans and followers online.
However, just a few hours after their outing, a controversial photo started circulating on various social media platforms. The photo showed Becky standing next to a man who was alleged to be her boyfriend, igniting an avalanche of criticism and backlash accusing her of lying to Asherkine to receive gifts and attention.
Reacting strongly to the incident, the Department of Mass Communication released a detailed and forceful statement aimed at putting an end to the misinformation and clearing Becky’s name. The statement read:
“Our attention has been drawn to a series of viral posts circulating across Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, and other platforms. These posts falsely allege that our student, Ifeme Rebecca Yahoma (Becky), denied having a boyfriend during the recent visit of celebrity guest Asherkine to UNN.”
“We categorically state that these claims are not only false but also defamatory and malicious in nature.”
“Following a thorough internal investigation, we can confirm beyond doubt that the viral photo was heavily photoshopped and intentionally circulated by an individual identified as Mr. Kenny, who falsely claims to be her boyfriend. This was a calculated effort to tarnish Becky’s image, constituting an act of defamation and character assassination.”
“As a department committed to promoting truth, integrity, and the protection of our students’ dignity, we find this behavior completely unacceptable and condemn it in the strongest possible terms.”
“Becky remains a respected and valued member of our department. We stand firmly behind her and will not tolerate attempts to damage her reputation through fabricated stories and manipulated content.”
“We therefore urge the general public, including students and active social media users, to disregard these misleading claims and refrain from sharing or engaging with content that promotes this false narrative. Any continued dissemination of this defamatory material may attract legal consequences for the parties involved.”
“Let us all join forces to stand against cyberbullying, defamation, and the irresponsible use of social media to spread harmful lies and destroy innocent lives.”
The department concluded by emphasizing the importance of digital responsibility and encouraging everyone to verify information before sharing, as false narratives can cause severe emotional and reputational harm.
