A Nigerian lady has shared a terrifying and emotional story about how she narrowly escaped being kidnapped by an Uber driver during an early morning commute in Lagos, leaving many social media users shocked and deeply concerned about safety in ride-hailing services.

The incident, which she recounted in a now-viral TikTok video, began when she left her home at around 4 a.m. to head to work for an important presentation. Upon arriving at the bus stop by 5 a.m., she found the park extremely crowded and decided to book an Uber for a faster and safer alternative.

“I was going to work that day, I had a presentation. I left home by 4 a.m. and got to the bus stop by 5. Everyone was struggling, so I ordered Uber,” she shared in the video, explaining her decision to use the app that morning.

She noted that the Uber vehicle arrived almost immediately, and she quickly got in without much thought or suspicion. However, unbeknownst to her, the driver had already cancelled the trip as soon as she entered the vehicle, effectively cutting off any official tracking or monitoring from the app.

“Immediately I ordered, it was just in my front. I rested my body and put my phone inside my bag. I didn’t know the Uber guy had cancelled the trip,” she explained. She mentioned that she attempted to nap briefly, but an overwhelming feeling of unease came over her, prompting her to open her eyes and assess her surroundings more carefully.

To her horror, she realized that the door handle on her side was broken, making it impossible for her to escape from inside. She also noticed that the window controls were disabled, leaving her completely at the mercy of the driver.

“There was this unrest in my spirit. I opened my eyes and saw that the door handle on my side was broken. There was no way to open it from inside. The glass too—I couldn’t wind it down. Only the driver had control,” she revealed, her voice trembling as she recounted the details.

Matters escalated when the driver subtly brought out a gun from a hidden compartment and placed it where she could see it before putting it back, a move meant to threaten her into silence.

“He brought out a gun from a hidden compartment and placed it where I could see it, then he put it back. That’s when I knew I was in serious trouble,” she said. She gathered the courage to ask him directly what his intentions were, whether he planned to harm or kidnap her.

Fortunately, while stuck in Lagos traffic, she spotted another motorist who had earlier smiled at her. This time, she made a desperate attempt to signal him for help by crying silently and leaning toward the driver’s side to make herself more visible.

“My face was already red. I was crying silently. I leaned against the driver’s side so he could see me properly,” she recounted. The observant motorist, sensing her distress, approached the Uber and knocked on the window, demanding that the driver wind it down. When he refused to comply, three more men joined to assist.

“One of them used a stone to break the windshield. They opened the door. I quickly pointed to where the gun was,” she narrated. Upon discovering the weapon, they immediately pulled the driver out and subjected him to a severe beating for his attempted crime.

“They found the gun and beat him up that day,” she confirmed in relief. The video of her testimony has sparked widespread outrage and concern among Nigerians and social media users globally, with many calling for stricter security measures and thorough background checks on ride-hailing service drivers to protect passengers.
