The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has reaffirmed the power of prayer in preserving Nigeria, stating that the nation’s condition would have deteriorated far more severely without divine intervention through the prayers of believers.
Speaking during the RCCG’s monthly Thanksgiving service held on Sunday, June 1, at the church’s headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, which also featured special prayers for Nigeria’s security and paramilitary officers, Pastor Adeboye emphasized the importance of continuous intercession in sustaining the country through its many trials.
He addressed critics who often question the effectiveness of persistent prayers and fasting, saying; “Some say, ‘You’ve been praying and fasting — where is the result?’ I laugh. If we had not prayed, Nigeria would have been in a far worse state. Let’s not stop.”
Pastor Adeboye reminded the congregation of God’s sovereignty in human affairs, urging believers never to underestimate the power of divine influence. He warned that even a brief pause in intercession would bring terrifying consequences.
“There is a God who rules in the affairs of men. If those praying would pause for just one week, the difference would be terrifying. Keep praying. God controls the hearts of kings,” he stated, encouraging the congregation to persevere in their spiritual responsibilities.
Preaching on the theme “Shadow of the Almighty,” Pastor Adeboye shared a number of miraculous testimonies that, according to him, show how RCCG continues to enjoy divine covering. He explained that while he doesn’t promote denomination over doctrine, there is a unique shield of protection over RCCG that cannot be denied.
He illustrated this by narrating an incident in the United States where a devastating flood affected 15 houses on a particular row — with only one house, marked with an RCCG House Fellowship sign, left untouched by the disaster.
“House number eight, with the RCCG sign, was the only one spared. House after house was flooded, but house number eight — the only one with a sign that read, ‘House Fellowship of RCCG holds here’ — remained untouched. That is not a coincidence — that is divine covering,” he explained.
He also mentioned a fire incident at Otedola Bridge in Lagos that occurred earlier in the year. According to him, flames engulfed buildings along the area, yet one RCCG building in the vicinity was completely unscathed.
“Buildings before and after were destroyed, but the RCCG building stood. That’s not ordinary,” he stated, as the church media team projected visual evidence of the scene to the congregation.
Encouraging Christians to remain committed in their faith, Pastor Adeboye emphasized that God’s protection, though invisible, is ever-present. He urged all to continue trusting in the Almighty, especially in times of insecurity and national uncertainty.
“Your safety is in God. His protection may not be visible, but it is always present. Whether young or old, in peace or in crisis, the Almighty covers His own,” he said.
Earlier in the service, Pastor Folu Adeboye led a heartfelt prayer session, interceding for Nigeria’s peace, and asking for divine wisdom upon those in leadership.
“Let us ask God to have mercy on our president and give him peace, so he may find joy in his tenure,” she prayed, drawing a strong chorus of “Amen” from the congregation.
The Thanksgiving service also paid special tribute to members of Nigeria’s security and paramilitary agencies, reaffirming RCCG’s unwavering commitment to praying for the safety, strength, and effectiveness of those who serve and protect the nation.
