A young Nigerian lady has taken to social media to recount a stressful and unexpected ordeal after she mistakenly transferred ₦55,200 to an unknown Opay account. What she thought would be a simple case of refunding the mistaken transaction turned into a frustrating negotiation process that lasted several days.
The lady, identified on X (formerly Twitter) by her handle @motundeee, narrated that she was trying to make a payment when she mistakenly sent the funds to the wrong account. To her dismay, the Opay account number she used was also the phone number of the recipient — someone she had never met before.
She immediately placed a call to the number in hopes of quickly resolving the issue. Fortunately, the line connected and she was able to speak with the recipient. However, rather than agreeing to return the money outright, the account owner shocked her by demanding a share of the funds as a condition to refund the rest.
“I sent ₦55,200 to a wrong account (Opay). I haven’t met her before. I called her line, she said, ‘How much do I want to give her from there?’” @motundeee shared in her tweet.
According to her, the woman held onto the money for three full days, refusing to send it back until a deal was reached. Eventually, after back-and-forth communication, both parties came to an agreement: the recipient would retain ₦5,200 as a sort of 'compensation,' while the remaining ₦50,000 would be returned to its rightful owner.
“I sha gave her ₦5,200. And the money has been with her since Saturday btw. I was able to collect it back on Tuesday I think,” she added, expressing both relief and frustration with the way the situation unfolded.
The story quickly gained attention on social media, drawing mixed reactions from users. While many condemned the recipient’s actions as unethical and opportunistic, others viewed it with a sense of dark humor, labeling it another example of the “Nigerian hustle” mentality. Some users even suggested that stricter regulations should be enforced for mobile transactions to protect people from such situations.
This incident serves as a cautionary tale for anyone making bank transfers, especially via mobile platforms, reminding users to double-check account details before completing any transaction.
