A commercial tricycle rider operating in Aba, Abia State, has earned widespread praise and admiration across Nigeria after demonstrating an extraordinary act of honesty by returning the sum of ₦4 million forgotten by a passenger in his tricycle.
The rider, who has been identified as Lucky Okoro, shared the emotional account of the incident on his Facebook page on Thursday. According to him, a Cameroonian woman boarded his Keke Napep from the Aba Main Park to the popular Ariaria Market. Unfortunately, she forgot a bag inside the tricycle, which later turned out to contain the substantial sum of money.
Okoro stated that upon realizing the bag had been left behind, he quickly returned to the park in a bid to find the woman but couldn’t locate her. Refusing to give up, he continued the search and eventually spotted her crying hysterically at a junction near Ariaria Market. From her body language and behavior, she appeared to be on the verge of a breakdown, possibly contemplating a drastic decision out of despair.
“I called her, wiped all her tears, then returned the money to her and took her to a hotel and she paid for it. I told her to stay there so that tomorrow she can continue. She is from Cameroon, she’s not a Nigerian talk less of Aba woman,” Okoro narrated in his heartfelt Facebook post.
Viral videos capturing the moment showed the emotional reunion between Okoro and the woman. In the footage, she is seen holding tightly onto the money while praying fervently for Okoro. A crowd of onlookers gathered to witness the touching scene, many applauding Okoro for his rare and commendable display of honesty and integrity.
Despite his noble deed, Okoro revealed that he faced ridicule from some of his colleagues in the tricycle business who mocked him and labeled him a “mugu” (a slang term for a gullible person) for returning such a large amount of money. However, Okoro remained unfazed by the criticism, proudly reaffirming his faith and personal values.
“Thanks Jehovah, I found her. Some of my fellow Keke people called me mugun but I am not a mugun. I love what I did,” he wrote, noting that he is a devoted Jehovah’s Witness from Umuomei in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
Okoro expressed his gratitude to God for giving him the opportunity to do the right thing and urged others to follow the path of integrity no matter the temptation.
As news of the incident spread, social media platforms lit up with reactions, with Nigerians from various walks of life applauding Okoro’s honesty. Many called for him to be publicly recognized and rewarded, saying that people like him are proof that goodness still exists in society.
