A Nigerian woman has shared a deeply emotional and heartbreaking account of her collapsed marriage, opening up about the painful sacrifices she made in a bid to maintain her relationship. Her story has since gained attention and sparked reactions on social media platforms.
The woman, popularly identified on TikTok as @missijay, took to the platform to pour out her heart in a heartfelt video where she narrated her struggles during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year. She revealed that what was meant to be a year of national service and self-development became one filled with deep financial hardship, emotional pain, and constant sacrifices.
According to Missijay, throughout her NYSC year, she would faithfully surrender her entire monthly allowance of ₦79,800 to her husband, leaving herself completely broke and unable to meet her own personal needs. She painfully disclosed that she resorted to borrowing money from online loan apps just to afford transport fare to her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), and to survive the basic daily expenses.
Sharing her experience, she stated: “My life is so private. Nobody knows that during my NYSC days, I used to earn ₦79,800 monthly but I’d give all the money to my husband then take loans from online apps just to be able to pay transport to my PPA. Monkey dey work, Baboon dey chop was my story,” she recounted, describing how her dedication and sacrifices were constantly taken for granted.
She went on to explain how the continuous pressure to keep her husband happy while shouldering the financial responsibilities of her own life left her emotionally drained and feeling exploited. Missijay admitted that it was a dark phase in her life where she felt trapped in a one-sided relationship with no control over her own finances or decisions.
Reflecting on her painful journey, she expressed immense relief and joy over leaving the toxic marriage behind. She confessed that walking out of the marriage was one of the best decisions she ever made, as it brought her the priceless gifts of financial independence, peace of mind, and personal freedom.
“Walking out of that marriage gave me one of the best things ever – financial independence and control. I am happy, blessed, and proud. Ahhhhhh. It was something I was subjected to ooo, I didn’t have a choice,” she added, encouraging other women in similar situations to choose themselves and prioritize their well-being.
Her touching story has stirred widespread conversations and reactions across various social media spaces, with many praising her bravery for coming out to share her experience and inspiring others who may be enduring similar struggles in silence.
Many netizens applauded her courage to reclaim her financial freedom and control over her life, while others criticized the culture of women sacrificing their financial stability for the sake of unhealthy relationships.
