A graduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), identified as Jamiu Bashola, is currently facing a heartbreaking and controversial situation after allegedly being detained by security authorities for seeking official validation of his JAMB result and admission status.
Jamiu, who is said to be an orphan, gained admission into FUTA in 2018 to study Civil Engineering, having successfully written and passed both the 2017 UTME and the university's Post-UTME screening exercise. His admission was reportedly accompanied by valid documentation, including letters from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and FUTA itself, alongside other relevant supporting academic records.
After seven demanding years of rigorous academic work and personal sacrifices, Jamiu graduated with an impressive CGPA of 4.41, a feat that positioned him among the top-performing students in his class. Unfortunately, his academic success has been marred by recent developments that have cast doubt on the legitimacy of his admission.
According to a viral thread on X (formerly Twitter), Jamiu recently visited the JAMB office to validate his records, as part of the process to enable his participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and future employment prospects. Shockingly, he was allegedly detained by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and JAMB officials during the visit.
To the dismay of friends and supporters, JAMB reportedly declared his admission into FUTA as “fake,” a claim that not only invalidates his degree but also blocks him from participating in NYSC or securing legitimate employment. This declaration has sparked outrage and disbelief from those who knew and studied alongside Jamiu.
One of Jamiu’s close friends shared his frustration on social media, writing: “JAMB, DSS & NPF detained my friend because he asked them to validate his JAMB result and admission. He didn’t cheat the system. He worked for everything. For 7 years, Jamiu struggled through school like many of us, particularly as an orphan.”
The post continued: “Now his hopes are dashed. After seven long years of sleepless nights and burning midnight candles. @JAMBHQ says his admission is fake. Now he can’t go for his youth service. He can’t apply for jobs. He’s stuck. A degree he earned through blood and sweat is being treated like it never happened.”
“We know Jamiu. We saw him every day for 7 years. We are witnesses to his journey. This is unfair. This is heartbreaking. We are speaking now because Jamiu deserves better. He deserves to be heard. He deserves justice.”
The incident has sparked widespread calls for an independent investigation and intervention from relevant authorities to ensure that the truth is established and that Jamiu’s academic and professional future is not destroyed unjustly.
