Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, was reportedly admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) in London during his recent trip for a routine medical check-up, according to a report by The Cable.
A close family member of the former president confirmed that Buhari suddenly fell ill while in the United Kingdom, prompting his urgent admission to the ICU for close monitoring and intensive treatment. The report stated that after receiving medical care, he was later discharged and is currently recuperating at a private residence in London.
Although the exact nature of Buhari’s illness was not officially disclosed to the public, sources close to the former president assured that he is responding well to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery soon. Once fully stabilized, he is expected to return to Nigeria to continue his recovery and reunite with his family and close associates.
It was also reported that Buhari’s uncle and lifelong confidant, Mamman Daura, is likewise in London, recovering from his own health issues. This development has led to concerns among supporters and political allies regarding the health and well-being of the former president and his inner circle.
Buhari’s health scare came to light after his conspicuous absence at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which was held in Lagos on May 28. His non-appearance raised questions among observers and political figures, given his status as a former leader of Nigeria and an influential regional figure.
In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Buhari explained that he was unable to attend the event due to important medical engagements in the United Kingdom that could not be postponed. The letter helped to clarify his absence and allay some of the growing speculation about his whereabouts at the time.
Earlier in May, a photo of Buhari with former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, surfaced online. The photo was reportedly taken during a private visit to Buhari in London. While the exact purpose of Bawa’s visit was not officially stated, the image fueled further discussions and speculations about Buhari’s activities and health status in the UK.
Many Nigerians have since expressed their concerns and sent prayers and goodwill messages to the former president, wishing him a speedy recovery and safe return home. Others highlighted the need for improved healthcare systems within Nigeria, so leaders and citizens alike can have access to world-class treatment locally instead of traveling abroad for medical care.
Despite the health scare, Buhari’s close relatives have reassured the public that he is now stable and in high spirits, appreciating the support and concern shown by friends, political associates, and the general public.
