Outrage has trailed a disturbing development in Asaba, Delta State, where WAEC candidates, including students of Unity Modern School, were forced to sit for their examinations at night using torchlights.
The shocking situation came to public attention through a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where a viral video captured the ordeal faced by the students.
In the video, a distressed woman voiced her frustration, narrating how the exam paper scheduled to commence at 2 p.m. was not delivered until 6 p.m. Due to this delay and the lack of electricity in the school, students were left with no choice but to write their papers in complete darkness, aided only by torchlights.
She lamented: “We’re using torchlight to write WAEC oo, it’s not okay. Paper that’s supposed to start by 2, they brought it by 6. No light in Unity Modern School Asaba, a state capital, not a village o.”
She further criticized the authorities, saying: “After they will say Tinubu is bad, this is wickedness—writing exam by night.”
The name of the school was confirmed in the footage, and the video showed several students continuing their exam under extremely poor and unsafe conditions.
As the footage circulated, many Nigerians took to social media to express their anger, disbelief, and deep concern for the future of the country’s education system.
See some reactions below:
@Iamkrebkira: “How dem one take pass like this 😭 Nigeria Education system have failed us and now the upcoming generation.”
@Marshalforx: “If you’re a Nigerian living in Nigeria and you’re on social media posting pictures and making silly trending videos, you haven’t suffered enough. Your head should be bowed in humility as you focus on finding real solutions to your problems.”
@DangoteOfData: “I’m 100% sure some students haven’t eaten anything since morning. Some just once.”
@Leo_z85: “Parents who allowed their kids to write exams at night & in darkness are encouraging this nonsense. Some folks shouldn’t be parents.”
@IconGerrard: “Tinubu and his APC cronies don’t care, after all they are busy campaigning for 2027 while we are in 2025.”
@DJayshapzy: “In my days people wrote with candles, maybe that’s what they’re trying to do to these young lady, we didn’t have X or anywhere to scream and make our voices heard like this. But recently Nigeria’s been retrogressive, leaders worry just for their seats not citizens.”
@ChinweOfoha2: “There is no new low this country has not sunk to in the hands of these frauds.”
