A 92-year-old man has been handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 20 years for the horrific rape and murder of a woman in Bristol over five decades ago, an act that has haunted her family for generations and remained unsolved for years.
Mr Justice Sweeting, presiding over the case, sentenced Ryland Headley to spend the rest of his life behind bars for the brutal killing of Louisa Dunne in 1967 at her home in Bristol’s Easton area. This historic case is widely believed to be the oldest cold case ever solved by modern English policing, and it makes Headley the oldest individual to be convicted of murder in the United Kingdom to date.
Following the heinous crime, Headley fled the southwest region of England, moving with his family first to London before ultimately settling in Ipswich, Suffolk. His criminal history did not end there. In 1977, he committed further horrific crimes, raping two elderly women aged 79 and 84 in Ipswich. Despite being sentenced to life imprisonment at that time, he astonishingly served only about two years after a successful appeal that reduced his sentence, citing so-called “sexual frustration” from his marriage as a mitigating factor—an argument that sparked outrage and controversy.
