A heartbroken Nigerian man, who tragically lost his pregnant wife, has come forward to respond after being harshly criticized by popular journalist, Reuben Abati, over the circumstances surrounding the heartbreaking incident.
The unfortunate situation had earlier gone viral after the man revealed that he lost his pregnant wife because a hospital refused to attend to her without first collecting a deposit of N500,000.
Reacting to the man’s revelation, Reuben Abati slammed him during a broadcast, expressing anger and disappointment. He labeled the man as irresponsible for not having a savings plan in place to cover medical emergencies like childbirth, which led to the death of his wife.
However, in an emotional and respectful reply, the grieving man clarified that he had indeed saved up some money for his wife’s delivery. Unfortunately, the amount he saved wasn’t up to the N500K that the hospital suddenly demanded before offering care.
He said…
“Sir, with due respect, this is not my first child. When my wife get belle, we dey take care of am to the best of my ability and I never come for public or come meet you, sir, make you borrow me money or make I take feed my children.”
“I saved money, but I didn’t save N500K. I saved money for that day, but they asked me for N500K deposit, not full payment. All the money wey I fit gather that day no pass 100K. I don’t know whether it is an offense if you don’t have up to N500K if your wife wan born. I don’t know if it’s an offense to live below 500K because you’re saying it’s the highest irresponsibility because I no get N500K. So it’s a crime now to be poor in Nigeria….”
The video capturing his reply and emotional defense has stirred more reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing sympathy and calling for reforms in the country’s healthcare system, especially in emergency maternal care.
