A Nigerian lady, Hamdiyya Sidi Shariff, 18, has been sentenced to 12 strokes of the cane, two years imprisonment, or a fine of ₦50,000 for expressing concerns about insecurity in Sokoto State. The young woman, who was arrested in November 2024, became the subject of public debate after posting videos online that lamented the rising insecurity in her region.

In her videos, Shariff had recounted how bandits were attacking communities, displacing residents, and subjecting vulnerable women to sexual exploitation. She had also criticized the authorities for their inaction, highlighting how this has exacerbated the already dangerous situation.

Lady, 18, sentenced by court for complaining about insecurity.

Shariff’s case went viral on social media, especially after she was arrested for allegedly inciting the public and using abusive language against Governor Ahmed Aliyu in a TikTok video. However, transcripts of her videos presented in court showed no attempt to incite violence or insult the governor. Despite this, she was subjected to both Sharia and Magistrates’ Court charges, with her statement taken without legal representation during the investigation.

In a shocking turn of events, Shariff was reportedly abducted by armed men while attempting to retrieve her phone. She was beaten and thrown from a moving tricycle, leaving her severely injured. She was later detained, and her case drew the attention of Amnesty International, which condemned the threats made against her and her lawyer, Abba Hikima.

Amnesty International accused the authorities of using intimidation and abuse of power to silence dissent, urging the focus to shift toward addressing the root causes of insecurity in Sokoto. The organization further called for an end to actions that target individuals speaking out against the government’s failure to combat insecurity, particularly in the eastern Sokoto region where killings and kidnappings have become increasingly frequent.

During a hearing in February 2025, the Police Prosecutor presented translated videos and a flash drive as evidence against Shariff. However, it was revealed during cross-examination that her statement had been taken without legal representation, prompting concerns about due process and her rights being violated. Despite these revelations, the court upheld her bail conditions until her sentencing.
