The highly anticipated grand finale took place at the residence of the U.S. Consul General in Lagos, where 64 outstanding finalists from different parts of Nigeria, including Abuja, Lagos, Osun, and Taraba States, showcased their spelling prowess in an intense and competitive atmosphere.

The event attracted a distinguished audience, including high-ranking diplomats, corporate executives, educators, and proud parents, who gathered to witness an extraordinary moment in Nigeria’s academic history. The competition, which commenced in September, saw hundreds of students from across the country participating in rigorous spelling contests that tested their linguistic skills, resilience, and dedication.

Contestants faced challenging rounds of spelling, each word pushing them to demonstrate their understanding of the English language, pronunciation, and word origins. The competition culminated in a thrilling showdown, where Amazing-Grace showcased exceptional composure and mastery of complex words. After several rounds of rigorous competition, she emerged victorious by correctly spelling the final word, “Melange.”

Her outstanding achievement not only earned her the championship title but also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: an all-expense-paid trip to represent Nigeria at the 100th edition of the globally renowned Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States. This marks a significant milestone for Nigeria, as it will be the first time the country participates in the international competition.

Speaking at the grand event, Acting U.S. Consul General JoEllen Gorg underscored the historical significance of the competition and its impact on young learners in Nigeria. She emphasized the importance of literacy and academic excellence, noting that the event marks Nigeria’s official entry into a competition that has shaped young minds across the globe.

“On behalf of the United States Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, it’s an honor to host the inaugural Spelling Bee In Nigeria finals as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the United States’ first national spelling bee. Since 1925, the Scripps Spelling Bee has been a symbol of American academic excellence, promoting literacy and a love for the English language among youth. This year is even more special, as Nigeria will officially participate alongside students from all 50 United States, as well as international students from Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, and beyond.” Gorg stated.

Eugenia Tachie-Menson, the convener of Spelling Bee in Nigeria, also expressed her excitement about the competition’s success and its transformative impact on young Nigerian students. She highlighted how the competition goes beyond spelling, shaping the confidence, public speaking skills, and critical thinking abilities of young learners.

“This is more than just a spelling competition; it is a platform that builds confidence, enhances public speaking skills, and fosters critical thinking in our young learners. Today, we have not only unearthed champions but have also ignited a passion for academic excellence among Nigerian students. We are incredibly grateful to our partners, dedicated parents, and supportive schools for making this vision a reality.” she said.

As Amazing-Grace prepares to represent Nigeria on the global stage, her victory serves as an inspiration to students nationwide, proving that dedication, perseverance, and a love for learning can open doors to incredible opportunities.
