Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has spoken out for the first time after surviving a serious health scare that required him to be placed in an induced coma following emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine.
The 27-year-old Nigerian forward suffered the internal injury during a high-intensity Premier League clash between Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Although he initially received treatment on the field, subsequent medical evaluations and scans revealed severe internal damage that necessitated immediate surgical intervention.
Doctors made the difficult decision to place Awoniyi in a medically induced coma to help stabilize his condition and aid in his recovery process. The news shocked fans across the football world, with many expressing concern and offering prayers for his swift healing.
In his first public statement since the traumatic experience, Awoniyi took to Instagram to express his deep gratitude to his fans, teammates, coaches, and the wider football community. He wrote:
“This season has been one of the most difficult of my career,” he shared in a heartfelt message. “But through it all, I have felt the love… I am grateful to still be here, to still be fighting, smiling, and in good spirits.”
