The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially responded to his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that he has remained committed to fostering peace and stability in the state despite the deepening political turmoil.
Fubara’s response comes shortly after President Tinubu declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State, an unprecedented move that led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The suspension follows months of escalating political tensions between Fubara and lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, who played a crucial role in his election in 2023. The conflict has led to impeachment attempts, governance paralysis, and accusations of constitutional violations.
During a national address on Tuesday evening, President Tinubu detailed his numerous interventions to resolve the crisis, lamenting that despite his mediation efforts, both sides failed to reach a lasting agreement.
The president particularly criticized Governor Fubara’s handling of governance, citing the controversial demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex on December 13, 2023, and the failure to rebuild it.
Tinubu also pointed to the rising cases of oil pipeline vandalism in Rivers State, expressing concern over the governor’s alleged inaction on security matters affecting the nation’s oil revenue.
Additionally, the president condemned the persistent standoff between the executive and legislative arms of the state government, which he said has hindered development and governance.
In response, Governor Fubara dismissed claims that his administration had failed in governance and security. He stated that he has consistently prioritized the protection of lives, property, and the development of Rivers State.
According to him, all his decisions have been guided by his constitutional mandate and a deep sense of duty to the people of Rivers State. He also emphasized that he has actively implemented peace initiatives to resolve the crisis.
He pointed out that he promptly reintegrated commissioners who had resigned from his cabinet and complied with the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding the state budget. However, he expressed frustration that lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly have continuously worked against his efforts.
Despite the political turmoil, Fubara reassured Rivers residents that his administration remains focused on executing critical projects and ensuring the welfare of the people.
Addressing the people of Rivers State, he urged them to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and hopeful for a resolution that will uphold democracy and the state’s progress.
He stated:
“My dear people of Rivers State, I address you today with a sense of responsibility and calm as we navigate this challenging political situation together.
and prosperity of our dear state.”
