The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a firm advisory regarding a proposed nationwide protest slated for Monday, April 7, 2025. This date, newly designated by the Federal Government as National Police Day, is meant to commemorate and celebrate the bravery, commitment, and service of Nigerian police officers across the country.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police expressed significant concern over the protest being organized by the “Take It Back Movement.” The Force emphasized that the timing of the protest is particularly troubling, as it directly clashes with a national event organized to honor the sacrifices and hard work of the police force.

While the NPF acknowledged the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens to engage in peaceful protest and lawful assembly, it raised questions about the intent behind choosing such a symbolic and important day for their demonstration. The police described the move as “mischievous” and labeled it a potentially “unpatriotic” action aimed at undermining the reputation and dignity of both the Police Force and the nation.

According to the official statement, “The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is however questionable and perceived to be a deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act that is capable of rubbishing and maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole.” The statement further warned that such timing could be misinterpreted both nationally and internationally as a lack of respect for institutions upholding law and order.

The NPF also highlighted that April 7 will feature significant commemorative activities and ceremonies. These events are expected to host a range of high-profile dignitaries, including state officials, foreign diplomats, and Inspectors-General of Police from other countries. The goal is to celebrate and institutionalize the contributions of the Nigerian police to national peace, security, and community service.

In reiterating the Force’s commitment to upholding democratic values and protecting the rights of citizens, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, appealed to the organizers and intended participants of the planned protest to reconsider their decision. He emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and the use of proper institutional channels to communicate grievances or advocate for change.

“The Nigeria Police Force advises the organizers to shelve this planned protest as it is ill-timed and mischievous. Dialogue remains the best route,” the statement concluded. The Force also reassured the public of its dedication to maintaining peace and order while ensuring the respectful observance of National Police Day.

April 7 was recently declared as National Police Day by the Federal Government. This decision was made to institutionalize an annual celebration recognizing the courage, professionalism, and service of the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining stability and protecting lives and property across the nation.
