On Wednesday, former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, joined other major opposition leaders at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja for a highly anticipated media briefing organized by the newly formed opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) banner.
The event marked a significant step in the build-up to the 2027 general elections, as several influential politicians officially came together to form a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The coalition consists of prominent figures and stakeholders from the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and other allied groups determined to reshape the Nigerian political landscape.
Some of the prominent leaders in attendance included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, as well as Senator Dino Melaye, former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung, PDP stalwart and publisher Dele Momodu, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Senator Ireti Kingibe, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, and former Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (rtd).
In a strategic move designed to strengthen its leadership structure and present a credible alternative to Nigerians, the coalition appointed former Senate President David Mark, who recently resigned from the PDP, as the interim national chairman of the ADC. Meanwhile, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was named interim national secretary, signaling a deliberate effort to bring experienced hands into key positions.
The gathering attracted widespread attention not only for the heavyweight lineup of opposition figures but also for its symbolism, as it showcased the willingness of various political actors to put aside personal ambitions and party differences in favor of a broader coalition goal — challenging and potentially dislodging the APC from power in 2027.
During the meeting, coalition members emphasized their commitment to addressing Nigeria’s urgent problems, including economic instability, growing insecurity, high unemployment, and widespread corruption. The leaders stressed that the current administration had failed to deliver on promises made to Nigerians and argued that the country requires new leadership grounded in unity and competence.
Several speakers highlighted the importance of inclusivity and grassroots mobilization to ensure that the coalition’s vision resonates with Nigerians from all regions. Plans were also hinted at regarding a nationwide tour to formally introduce the coalition’s agenda, unveil a comprehensive manifesto, and rally supporters ahead of the elections.
Peter Obi, known for his emphasis on economic reforms and transparent governance, was seen interacting closely with Atiku Abubakar, El-Rufai, Amaechi, and other notable attendees, further fueling discussions on the possible configuration of a joint presidential ticket or strategic alliances within the group.
Observers noted that the presence of several influential figures from different parties and backgrounds signals a serious intent to build an inclusive and broad-based opposition movement capable of mounting a strong electoral challenge in 2027.
The coalition's adoption of the ADC as its official political platform represents a strategic move, aimed at uniting fragmented opposition forces under a single, recognizable identity while offering a fresh alternative to the electorate.
Meanwhile, the meeting sparked lively discussions online, with many Nigerians expressing hope that the new alliance could pave the way for much-needed change in the country’s governance.
