The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Workers’ Day celebration. The announcement was made in a public statement released on Tuesday by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Nigerian government.
In the statement, Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the immense contributions of Nigerian workers to the country's development, describing them as the backbone of the nation. He praised their relentless efforts, sacrifices, and steadfast commitment to building a prosperous Nigeria that commands respect on the global stage.
“Our workers are the true heroes of our society,” the Minister stated. “Their resilience, dedication, and hard work have made a significant impact in shaping the Nigeria we see today. There is dignity in labour, and the strength of our nation lies in the dedication we bring to our various fields of work.”
Tunji-Ojo further stressed the importance of promoting peace and industrial harmony as a crucial foundation for sustainable economic growth and national development. He noted that peace is not just a virtue but a necessary condition for progress and prosperity in any country.
Encouraging innovation and productivity among workers, the Minister called on Nigerians to continue striving for excellence and self-improvement in their respective careers and industries. He pointed out that a culture of innovation, discipline, and dedication would help position Nigeria as a globally competitive nation.
“Let us continue to demonstrate the values of integrity, creativity, and professionalism in all that we do. Innovation and hard work will lead Nigeria to greater heights,” he said.
The Minister also used the opportunity to reassure citizens and foreign residents in the country of the government’s strong commitment to safety and national security. He affirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains dedicated to protecting lives and property while fostering a peaceful environment for all.
“This administration is fully committed to the security of life and property of every citizen and foreigners in the country,” he reiterated.
While wishing Nigerian workers a joyful and peaceful celebration, Minister Tunji-Ojo urged the public to continue supporting the government’s efforts under the Renewed Hope Agenda led by President Bola Tinubu. He encouraged Nigerians to maintain optimism and trust in the government’s plans to revive the economy, strengthen institutions, and improve the welfare of all citizens.
“As we mark this significant day, let us keep hope alive and work together towards a greater Nigeria. The Renewed Hope Agenda remains our guiding path toward national rebirth and sustainable development,” he concluded.
