The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, April 18, and Monday, April 21, 2025, as public holidays in celebration of the upcoming Good Friday and Easter Monday. This declaration was made to give citizens the opportunity to observe the religious significance of the Easter period, which commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The announcement was issued by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a formal statement released by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on Tuesday. The statement expressed the government’s desire for all Nigerians to take part in the celebrations and reflect on the deeper meanings of the holiday, while also promoting national unity and peaceful coexistence across the country.
In his statement, Dr. Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to use the Easter period as an opportunity to reflect on the core values of the Christian faith, including sacrifice, love, and unity. He emphasized the importance of embodying these values in everyday life and encouraged citizens to engage in acts of kindness and goodwill toward one another, especially during the festive season. He also encouraged everyone to take time to pray for the country’s continued peace, prosperity, and stability.
Furthermore, Dr. Tunji-Ojo reassured Nigerians of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, which is designed to foster national growth and development across all sectors. This agenda seeks to ensure that the country’s prosperity is achieved through collaboration, unity, and forward-thinking policies that uplift the lives of citizens. The minister reiterated the government’s ongoing efforts to create a peaceful and stable environment for all Nigerians to thrive in.
In addition to these reflections, Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to embrace one another with love and generosity, regardless of background, and to extend acts of kindness, which would help to foster stronger social bonds and communities. He also wished all Christians across the nation a blessed and joyous Easter celebration. The minister took the opportunity to extend warm holiday greetings to all Nigerians, urging them to make the most of the break by spending quality time with family, friends, and loved ones.
