According to LASTMA, these actions are prohibited under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, which seeks to reduce distractions on the road and improve road safety. The agency's statement highlights the importance of focused driving and discourages behavior that could lead to accidents or other traffic-related incidents.

The warning, which was shared on LASTMA's official X handle on Wednesday, April 9, emphasizes the legal consequences of these actions. The agency specified that violators could face severe penalties, including vehicle impoundment and imprisonment for up to three months or community service for up to six months.

“Smoking, drinking, and eating while driving is an offence under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018. Additional Penalty: Impound vehicle / Three (3) months imprisonment or six (6) months community service,” the post reads.

This move is part of LASTMA’s ongoing efforts to promote safer roads across Lagos and minimize the risk of road traffic accidents due to driver distraction.
