Popular Nigerian politician and former lawmaker, Senator Dino Melaye, sparked energetic reactions during a major political gathering in Abuja with a bold chant that took aim at the ruling party. In a charged moment that drew applause and laughter from the audience, Melaye declared, “APC comot for road, ADC don com!”—a phrase that quickly became a trending slogan among supporters of the newly formed coalition.

The occasion was the official unveiling of a fresh opposition coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a strategic political move ahead of the 2027 general elections. The event took place at the prestigious Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja and brought together some of the most influential figures in Nigerian politics who are united in their resolve to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a symbolic announcement, former Senate President David Mark was introduced as the interim chairman of the opposition coalition, while former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was appointed as the interim secretary. The ADC will serve as the temporary platform for the coalition, which plans to officially transition into a new political body known as the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), once registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This groundbreaking coalition includes several major opposition heavyweights, such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi, and media mogul Dele Momodu. Their presence at the gathering underscored a growing commitment to forming a unified political force to counter the APC’s grip on power.

According to observers, the coalition’s emergence comes at a critical time when Nigerians are expressing widespread frustration over inflation, insecurity, and governance challenges under the current administration. The opposition is seeking to tap into this discontent by offering a credible and coordinated alternative that could reshape the country’s political landscape.

However, not everyone within the ADC is on board with this new direction. A faction of the party has raised objections, claiming that the merger talks and coalition formation were conducted without proper internal consultations. They argue that such unilateral moves risk undermining the party’s autonomy and internal democracy.

Despite these internal disputes, the launch of the coalition has been widely interpreted as a bold step toward opposition unity, with political analysts noting its potential to significantly influence the outcome of the 2027 elections. Dino Melaye’s spirited chant served as both a rallying cry and a symbol of the coalition’s determination to challenge the status quo.
