The Alaafin-elect, Prince Akeem Owoade, has officially revealed his royal title ahead of his much-anticipated coronation as the new ruler of the historic Oyo Kingdom.
In a formal statement released by the palace on Tuesday, it was announced that the newly selected monarch will be addressed as: “His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, Alaafin of Oyo.”
The palace authorities further clarified the proper usage of the title, emphasizing that the numeral “I” after “Owoade” is a Roman numeral one (I), not the English number one (1).
The statement read in part: “This is to inform the general public that the proper manner of addressing the Alaafin for all activities and in the media is EXACTLY as follows: His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, Alaafin of Oyo.
“The number after OWOADE is the Roman Numeral One (I), not the English Number One (1). The public is enjoined to adhere strictly to the use of the wordings exactly as stated above and without adding a prefix or suffix to any of the names as stated.”
This declaration marks a significant step in the final preparations for the formal installation of the new Alaafin, a process steeped in deep-rooted traditional rites and customs.
Currently, the Alaafin-elect is undergoing the mandatory 21-day traditional rites, a sacred initiation process known as "Oro Opebi," which is an essential ritual marking his transition into kingship.
The Chief of Staff to the Alaafin, Rotimi Osuntola, confirmed during a press briefing in Ibadan that the traditional rites, which officially commenced on March 7, are expected to conclude on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
Following the completion of these rites, an elaborate coronation ceremony will be held, drawing dignitaries, traditional rulers, government officials, and well-wishers from across Nigeria and beyond to witness the historic enthronement of the new Alaafin of Oyo.
