The incident took place on Sunday at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, where Whitemoney was on hand to accept the Afrobeats Single of the Year award on behalf of popular Nigerian singer Flavour.

While accepting the award, Whitemoney made a remark that caused a stir, stating that he was receiving the award “on behalf of the Igbos.” This statement prompted immediate reactions from the audience and online followers.

Dotun, in his response on X (formerly Twitter), criticized Whitemoney’s comment, calling it unnecessary and inappropriate for such an occasion. He emphasized that the award was meant to represent an achievement for all Africans and Nigerians, not a specific tribe.

Dotun’s post read, “On behalf of the Igbos, I am sorry, that was so unnecessary. It didn’t need that type of narrative. It’s an award won by an African for Afrobeat and a Nigerian.” He pointed out that the comment detracted from the universal significance of the award.

In turn, Whitemoney took to his social media platforms to clarify his statement. He explained that his comment stemmed from a sense of pride in an Igbo man winning the prestigious award in the predominantly Yoruba-dominated Afrobeat industry. He expressed that his intention was to celebrate this achievement, which he believed was significant for the Igbo community. Whitemoney also offered an apology to Flavour, acknowledging that his words may have unintentionally caused more harm than good.
