Controversial Nigerian social media activist, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has once again found himself in the spotlight, as he was re-arraigned by the police on fresh cyberbullying charges. The case involves a number of high-profile Nigerian celebrities, including renowned Nollywood actresses Tonto Dikeh and Iyabo Ojo, as well as music producer Samuel Oguachuba, better known by his stage name Samklef.
VDM was arraigned on Thursday before Justice Musa Liman at the Federal High Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). He was charged with a five-count indictment under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, which addresses issues relating to the misuse of online platforms and the transmission of offensive or harmful content.
The controversial influencer, widely known for his bold and often contentious commentary on societal issues, pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against him. His legal representative, Deji Adeyanju, pleaded with the court to maintain the bail conditions earlier granted by Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of a sister court.
The prosecution, led by Victor Okoye from the office of the Inspector General of Police, did not oppose the defense's request. Subsequently, Justice Liman agreed to uphold the previously set bail terms and adjourned the case for trial on July 24, 2025.
VeryDarkMan had earlier been arraigned on May 22, 2024, on similar charges, and was granted bail on June 10, 2024, in the sum of ₦10 million. The bail conditions include the provision of two sureties, each either working in reputable organizations or serving as Level 17 federal civil servants with valid evidence of tax payment over the past three years.
This high-profile legal battle has continued to draw widespread public interest, largely due to VDM’s massive online following and the prominent status of the individuals he is accused of cyberbullying. Observers and social media users across the country are keenly following the case as it unfolds, waiting to see how justice will be served in this digital age drama.
