Speaking candidly during a recent interview on the show Curiosity Made Me Ask, the multiple award-winning actor explained why he rejects the title, boldly describing it as a “scam.” He stressed that while it is meant to be a compliment, it carries undertones of finality and retirement that he doesn’t align with at this stage of his vibrant career.

RMD stated that in his personal estimation, there are true legends in the Nigerian film industry who have earned and deserve such an honorific more than he does. He mentioned iconic veterans such as Olu Jacobs and Pete Edochie, describing them as the real ancestors and pillars of Nollywood who have paved the way for generations of actors to thrive.

“I think all those legend things are a scam,” he remarked. “I have my legends like Uncle Olu Jacobs and Uncle Peter; those are our ancestors, our legends. I was still watching him when he was saying ‘Ribena children are healthy children.’ So I don’t subscribe to that. I think it is a scam when they call me a legend because they are trying to relegate me to that neighbourhood of retired people or people who should be nearing retirement. So, no, I don’t subscribe to it.”

The actor further admitted that whenever he is called a legend, it makes him feel like an old man being gradually pushed towards the background, which is not reflective of his current pace or plans in the industry. He pointed out that he still has a lot to contribute both in front of and behind the camera, and would rather be addressed in a way that represents his ongoing relevance and active participation in Nollywood’s evolution.

RMD’s statement sparked a lively conversation online, with fans and fellow celebrities reacting to his views on titles, legacy, and the dynamics of ageism in the entertainment space. Many praised his humility and candidness, while others insisted that his decades of consistent brilliance and contributions to the Nigerian film industry have rightly earned him the legendary status, whether he accepts it or not.
