The Kwara State Police Command has officially confirmed that controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, popularly known by his stage name Portable, is currently in police custody. The arrest comes in response to multiple serious allegations leveled against him, including defamation, threats to life, incitement, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
This development was disclosed in a formal statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, who detailed the circumstances surrounding Portable’s arrest and the legal procedures followed by the authorities to ensure due process was maintained. The arrest follows a petition lodged by one Mr. Okunola Saheed, who is also popularly known in public circles as “Osupa.”
“The suspect was arrested following a petition received from one Mr. Okunola Saheed, popularly known as ‘Osupa,’” the official statement read.
The statement further revealed that detectives from the Kwara State Police Command took swift and lawful investigative steps upon receiving the complaint, diligently reviewing the evidence and testimonies provided. The petition, which borders on a variety of serious allegations including criminal defamation, threat to life, incitement, character assassination, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and the use of abusive and insulting words, prompted the police to seek the necessary legal backing before proceeding with an arrest.
“In view of the weight of these allegations and the supporting evidence presented, the command secured a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin,” SP Ejire-Adeyemi stated, emphasizing that all actions taken were in accordance with the rule of law.
Acting upon the obtained warrant, a team of law enforcement operatives from the Kwara State Police Command proceeded to Abeokuta, Ogun State, where the singer was apprehended at approximately 19:25hrs on Saturday. The arrest was reportedly carried out peacefully, with Portable taken into custody in the presence of legal representatives from both sides to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the process.
“He is currently in custody and arrangements are being made to charge him to court without delay,” the police spokesperson added.
SP Ejire-Adeyemi went on to appeal to the general public to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified or speculative information regarding the case, and allow the police to conclude their investigation and legal processes. She assured that the command would continue to provide timely and accurate updates as the case develops and progresses through the judicial system.
This latest incident adds to the string of controversies surrounding Portable, who has previously made headlines for various brushes with the law and public disputes. As the case unfolds, many Nigerians are closely watching to see how events will play out in court in the coming days.
