Nigerian lawyer, Inibehe Effiong has shared fresh details about the case involving Alabi Quadri, the young boy who gained attention for standing before Peter Obi’s convoy during the 2022 presidential campaign. Effiong provided new insights into the arrest of Alabi, who had initially been reported to be arrested in connection with robbery.
According to Effiong, he and his colleagues appeared at the Magistrate Court in Lagos on the 9th of April, 2025 to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrest, detention, and remand of Alabi Quadri. The lawyer confirmed that Alabi, who is still a minor, has been in custody since January.
Effiong further explained that the arrest was linked to a feud between Alabi and some local “area boys” who had harassed him after he received a gift for his involvement in halting Peter Obi’s convoy during the election campaign. Alabi had failed to "settle" the area boys, leading to ongoing harassment. According to the lawyer, the area boys were the ones who took Alabi to the police, falsely accusing him of being part of a group involved in street fights.
These same area boys, who were upset that Alabi had not shared the money he received after the encounter with Obi’s convoy, took him to Amukoko Police Station (Pako Police Station) where he was detained. The police, however, brought Alabi before a Magistrate alongside four unknown adults, accusing them of conspiring to commit armed robbery, including using cutlasses during the robbery.
The charges, according to the police, involved the robbery of two victims, who were allegedly deprived of N579,000 in cash and four mobile phones. The lawyer conducted a two-hour interview with Alabi, and after hearing the details of the case, he expressed strong belief that Alabi was a victim of Nigeria's criminal justice system.
In addition to the arrest details, Effiong clarified that Alabi is a minor, under 18 years old. Alabi has made three appearances before the Magistrate Court, where the court has remanded him, along with the four adults, to the custodial center while waiting for legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Effiong emphasized that they will continue to pursue all legal avenues to secure Alabi’s freedom and will provide further updates as the case progresses. He concluded his statement by thanking everyone for their attention and support.
