Popular Nollywood actress Kate Amaka Henshaw, widely known as Kate Henshaw, has recently called out the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for a noticeable grammatical error in one of their official social media posts.
The actress, known for her outspoken nature, took to the platform X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the mistake and urge JAMB to pay more attention to their communication, especially considering their influential role in the Nigerian education sector. Kate Henshaw expressed her concern over the growing number of official errors that seem to be going unnoticed, which she feels could affect the credibility of important institutions like JAMB.
JAMB had previously issued a statement regarding the schedule for an upcoming examination, in which they sought to clarify the exact starting time. The statement read: “@PeterObi, Your Excellency, I must assert that our examination is scheduled to commence at 8:00 am, not 6:00 am.”
It continued: “While verification and other clearance processes begins at 6:30 am, it is imperative that candidates are afforded adequate time…” This statement was intended to clarify the process leading up to the examination but contained a grammatical oversight that Kate Henshaw promptly pointed out.
In her response, Henshaw took to the platform to call attention to the mistake, specifically focusing on the use of the word “begins” instead of the correct form, “begin.” She posted a quote from JAMB’s statement and added: “By the way @JAMBHQ, it’s not ‘while verification and other clearance processes BEGINS.’ It is ‘while verification and other clearance processes BEGIN!! I had all my education in this country. It was never this bad.”
Although many people ignored the error, Kate Henshaw’s correction quickly went viral, sparking a large conversation online. Her post not only highlighted the error but also touched upon the broader issue of grammar in official communications. As the post gained attention, numerous users on X shared their opinions and reactions to the mistake, some of them critiquing the quality of communication in governmental organizations.
The actress’s correction sparked a discussion about the importance of proper grammar in formal communications, especially from government bodies like JAMB, which hold a significant influence on the country’s education system. Many agreed that errors like this should not be overlooked as they reflect poorly on such institutions. Some even questioned how such mistakes could be made in official statements that are meant to guide and inform the public accurately.
