Veteran Nollywood actor, Ibrahim Chatta, has addressed the swirling rumours of being snubbed once again by the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), clarifying that his absence from the nominations list was not due to any oversight by the organizers. In a candid conversation, Chatta set the record straight about the ongoing speculations surrounding his relationship with the prestigious awards event.
Chatta made the comments during an appearance on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast, which was hosted by popular skit maker IsBae U. The actor was asked about his widely discussed outburst following last year’s AMVCA nominations, when many of his fans felt that he had been unfairly ignored by the organizers despite his stellar performances in Nollywood films. This incident had sparked public debates about whether the actor was being deliberately left out of consideration for the awards, leading to a wave of support from his followers who were displeased by his absence from the list.
This time around, however, Chatta took a more measured tone, aiming to put the controversy to rest. He revealed that, contrary to public perception, he was not snubbed by the AMVCA in 2025. Instead, he explained that he had simply chosen not to submit a film for consideration this year, dispelling any notions of being overlooked by the awards committee.
Chatta emphasized, “I am not interested in the AMVCA. Why should I be praying for something that I am not interested in? Whenever I am interested to go for the AMVCA, I will make a film and submit the film so that I can be rated and check if I was worthy of the award.” His statement made it clear that his decision not to engage with the AMVCA was a personal one and not rooted in any form of discontent with the event.
The celebrated actor, known for his gripping performances in Yoruba-language films, further explained that his low-key, private lifestyle might also contribute to his absence at major industry events. He noted, “I ask myself why I have not been invited. You know, I am not a very social person, so maybe they think if they give me [an award], I won’t show up. Maybe that was why I wasn’t invited.” Chatta’s candidness about his personal preferences shed light on the possibility that his reluctance to attend social gatherings may have played a role in his exclusion from some major industry functions, including the AMVCA.
Despite his absence from the AMVCA nominations, Chatta went on to highlight the numerous accolades he has already received over the course of his illustrious career, downplaying the importance of one particular award ceremony. “Do you know how many awards I have? Nelson Mandela award, Pink Award from Wole Soyinka, I have one from Odunlade Adekola and many others,” he proudly remarked. Chatta’s extensive list of recognitions is a testament to his significant contributions to the Nollywood industry and his enduring legacy as a respected actor.
In his interview, Chatta also made it clear that his passion for acting is not driven by the desire for external validation, but by the love for the craft itself. His focus remains on delivering compelling performances, regardless of the awards or accolades that may come his way.
