Popular Benue gospel artist, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, widely celebrated under his stage name New Jerusalem, has sadly passed away at the age of 53. His death has triggered an outpouring of grief and heartfelt tributes from fans, fellow musicians, and Christian faithful across Benue State and far beyond.
New Jerusalem was widely recognized for his exceptional talent in using Tiv Swange music — a traditional dance music style — as a powerful tool for evangelism. His creative approach not only captivated audiences in Nigeria but also gained him recognition and admiration internationally. He was known for his deep, soul-stirring lyrics and energetic performances that inspired spiritual growth and joy among his listeners.
Leading the wave of tributes was the former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, who paid a condolence visit to the late artist’s family at their Makurdi residence. During the visit, Ortom spoke fondly of New Jerusalem’s unwavering faith and remarkable contributions to gospel music worldwide. He shared a personal story about how the singer’s music had even been played during a teaching session in Australia, highlighting the artist’s global influence.
Ortom, who had cultivated a strong personal relationship with the Ikyereve family over the years, assured them of his continued support. He also pledged to stand by both the family and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, emphasizing the importance of preserving the late singer’s legacy for future generations.
In an emotional show of gratitude, the deceased’s elder brother, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, disclosed that one of Israel’s sons was named Ortom as a token of appreciation for the former governor’s unwavering friendship and support to the family over the years.
New Jerusalem is survived by his devoted wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, who has often shared the stage with him during various gospel outreaches and concerts. He also leaves behind four children and several close relatives who have vowed to uphold his ministry and continue his legacy of faith-inspired music.
According to family announcements, his burial has been scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, in his hometown of Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, located in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State. The funeral is expected to draw a large crowd of admirers, fellow musicians, religious leaders, and community members who wish to pay their final respects to a man whose music touched countless lives.
