Rising Nollywood star Emeka Nwagbarocha has ignited heated reactions across social media after openly ridiculing both the organisers and attendees of a grand welcome party held in honour of popular activist VeryDarkMan in Abuja. The party followed the activist's release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

VeryDarkMan, widely regarded for his outspoken views against injustice and systemic corruption, was detained for five days by the EFCC, an event that triggered massive outcry and led to a protest at the EFCC’s Abuja office by his loyal supporters who demanded his freedom.

Upon his release, supporters organized a vibrant welcome celebration that quickly became the subject of online debate. While many celebrated the activist’s return, Emeka Nwagbarocha took a dissenting stance and voiced his criticism on social platform X (formerly known as Twitter), where his comments quickly went viral.

In his post, Nwagbarocha bluntly stated:

“We have a lot of foolish people per square meter in this country.”

The statement ignited widespread debate, with reactions pouring in from netizens who either agreed with his perspective or condemned his lack of empathy. While some felt the celebration was unnecessary, others defended it as a rightful tribute to someone they believe represents the voice of the marginalized.

Reactions trailing Emeka’s criticism of Verydarkman’s welcome party

MarquizDejavex expressed disagreement: “For celebrating their helper? It’s okay when they celebrate useless celebrities but they can’t celebrate the voice of the poor.”

balogun19_sarah wrote: “A lot of people don’t have father figures. They see him as their dad, you can’t blame them.”

ogbame_justus responded: “You’re one of them, and in this instance you’re a champion of it, because welcoming back someone they hold in high regard is not a problem. Even if it was thieves welcoming back their thieving colleague, allow people practice democracy my brother.”

OGNAZti defended the gesture as symbolic: “It’s not foolish to welcome a freedom fighter. Though I no rate am, but this is the only person that fights for the poor and voiceless in this land! A welcome party is the least people can do for a person who’s chesting about 40+ lawsuits unto fighting for the poor!”
