Veteran Nigerian rapper and activist, Eedris Abdulkareem, has come forward with a shocking revelation, claiming that he was offered a bribe of N200 million to continue his vocal criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration through his music and public activism. In a video posted on his social media page, Abdulkareem shared the details of this alleged offer, which was made by an individual who claimed to be a senator.
According to the rapper, this person reached out to him with an enticing financial proposal in response to his controversial protest song, Tell Your Papa, which has garnered significant attention and support online for its harsh criticism of the current administration. In the video, Eedris explained how the supposed senator initially contacted him, revealing that he was part of a meeting with Seyi Tinubu and other government officials. The man allegedly told Eedris that they would offer him a bribe to continue his public dissent, but he warned the rapper not to take any money from them, as they intended to support him secretly.
Eedris Abdulkareem recalled the exchange, saying, “So I got a call from one criminal who claimed to be a ‘Honourable.’ He didn’t even let me hear his name clearly. When I asked again, he claimed to be a senator.” He further elaborated on the conversation, saying the man mentioned he was meeting with Seyi Tinubu and other influential figures in the government. Eedris was told that they would be making an attempt to bribe him, but he was advised to decline their offer, as the senator and his associates intended to offer underground support instead. Abdulkareem, however, rejected the N200 million offer, boldly warning the caller and anyone behind the proposal to stay away from him. He stated, “You think you can use me for a caricature? You people are mad. I’ve been ready for you all for a long time.”
In the video, Eedris made it clear that his stance on the matter would not change, despite the substantial sum being offered to him. He expressed his commitment to speaking out against the government and not being swayed by monetary offers. His song, Tell Your Papa, which harshly criticizes President Tinubu and the administration, was recently banned by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on April 10. The ban, however, has sparked widespread backlash, with rights and arts organizations strongly condemning the move. Several groups, including the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), have argued that the ban could have the opposite effect, increasing the song’s popularity and amplifying its message, especially in light of the country’s ongoing economic struggles.
Similarly, the Media Rights Agenda has criticized the NBC’s actions, claiming that the move was an abuse of regulatory authority. Ayomide Eweje, Programme Officer at Media Rights Agenda, stated, “The NBC has completely misunderstood its role. It is acting more like a propaganda tool than a neutral media regulator.” Eedris Abdulkareem’s decision to turn down the bribe and his continued support for the protest song has drawn attention to the ongoing debate over free speech, government censorship, and the role of music in political activism in Nigeria.
