Nigerian singer and songwriter Cynthia Morgan, popularly known as Madrina, has stirred a wave of mixed reactions following her remarks about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Taking to her Instagram stories, the artist joined the ongoing discussion on the country’s economic situation, particularly the controversial removal of fuel subsidies, which has contributed to a sharp increase in the cost of living.
Morgan’s comments came in response to a viral video of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who strongly criticized Tinubu’s government, calling it “terrible” due to the economic hardship Nigerians are currently facing.
The corps member, who expressed her frustration over the high cost of goods, claimed that she was facing threats from NYSC officials simply for speaking out about the struggles caused by the government’s policies.
While acknowledging the tough economic conditions that citizens are enduring, Cynthia Morgan disagreed with the NYSC member’s strong condemnation of Tinubu’s leadership.
The singer argued that, despite the current challenges, Tinubu is not the “most terrible” president in Nigeria’s history, as some critics claim.
To support her argument, Morgan referenced the book Soldiers of Fortune by Max Siollun, which provides historical insights into Nigeria’s past administrations. She suggested that, when compared to some previous governments, Tinubu’s tenure does not rank as the worst.
She wrote;
“When you read The Soldiers of Fortune, you will realize Tinubu is not the most terrible president Nigeria has ever had, but nevertheless, removing 100 per cent of the subsidy was a terrible move.
It’s not too late to do something, though. At least if fuel is 500, the cost of living will reduce. It’s only right that we ease into total subsidy removal with the right development and infrastructure to sustain such decisions. A baby can’t go from breast milk to yam in just a day. Abeg consider us.”
