Renowned Nigerian singer, Burna Boy, has issued a stern warning to fellow artists, advising them not to pay attention to the influence of Nigerian social media fans, whom he claims won’t help them sell out stadiums anywhere in the world.
Taking to his Instagram page, the ‘Twice as Tall’ crooner shared his thoughts and offered valuable advice to his colleagues in the music industry, stressing that they should be cautious not to be misled by the buzz surrounding Nigerian social media fans.
Burna Boy highlighted that despite the popularity and presence of fans on platforms like Twitter, they won't be able to fill up any stadium for the artist, no matter where they perform globally. His remarks were directed at the unrealistic expectations many artists might have regarding social media validation and the impact it has on their global appeal.
He also broke down the financial differences between streaming numbers in Nigeria compared to international markets such as the UK, the US, and Europe. According to Burna Boy, even if an artist were to gain a million streams in Nigeria, it would only translate to a modest $300-$400, while in the UK or US, the same number of streams would earn around £3000-£4000 or $3000-$4000, respectively. This stark difference, he said, illustrates the limited commercial value of relying solely on the Nigerian market for revenue generation.
Burna Boy continued, further emphasizing that having a song top the charts on streaming platforms in Nigeria should not be a source of immense pride. Instead, he advised his peers to aim higher in their pursuits and consider diversifying their business ventures for a more sustainable future in music and beyond. He concluded his message with the phrase, "I type with love. #NoSignOfWeakness," indicating his sincere concern for his colleagues' long-term success.
