In a recent interview with popular media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, on Channels TV, the veteran actress disclosed that her decision to take a step back from acting was primarily influenced by her responsibilities as a mother.

According to Bukky Wright, there comes a time in a woman’s life when her children require her undivided attention, especially when they are growing up in a foreign country. She emphasized that she needed to be physically present in their lives to guide them properly, which led her to put her acting career on hold for a significant period.

During the interview, she explained:

“Well, I decided to diversify into something else for a bit, but now I’m back. If you ask whether it was about making money, no, I didn’t fall out of love with acting, and I certainly haven’t done it all yet. There are still many things I want to achieve in the industry.

“However, I had to take a break for my children. My children needed me, and as a mother, I believe it’s crucial to be there for them at important stages of their lives. Since they were living abroad, I had to leave everything behind and dedicate my time to raising them properly.”

She went on to stress the challenges of raising children in a foreign land without direct parental supervision, stating:

“When children grow up in an environment where they’re constantly reminded, ‘You’re not my mum, you can’t talk to me like that,’ or ‘You’re not my dad, you can’t tell me what to do,’ it becomes even more essential for a mother to be present.

“That’s why we, as mothers, sometimes have to make difficult decisions. There are times when we must prioritize our children over everything else, even our careers. A mother will always be a mother, and I don’t regret stepping away from the industry for them.”

She further touched on the significant role mothers play in child-rearing, drawing comparisons between maternal and paternal responsibilities:

“A mother’s duty is never-ending. In Yoruba culture, there is a saying: ‘Iya ni iya mi, Baba ni baba gbobo aye,’ which means, ‘My mother is my mother, but a father can be a father to many.’ A mother’s love and commitment are unique, and sometimes we even go as far as attending Omugwo (traditional postpartum care for new mothers). Have you ever heard of a man doing that? It’s always the mother’s role.”

Bukky Wright’s heartfelt revelation resonated with many fans, especially mothers who understand the sacrifices required to balance career and family. Now that she is ready to return to the industry, many are eager to see her back on the big screen, reclaiming her spot as one of Nollywood’s most beloved actresses.
