Veteran comedian, Alibaba Akpobome has shared a hilarious yet suspense-filled story about how he was nearly arrested by the DSS during an event where he made the former Nigerian head of state, General Sani Abacha, laugh.
The incident occurred at a cultural event organized in honor of the president. Alibaba recalls how a troupe of dancers was performing, but as the event progressed and the day began to turn darker, he noticed something unusual: Abacha, who typically wore dark sunglasses, wasn’t putting them on.
Concerned about the situation, Alibaba decided to stop the dancers mid-performance and turned his attention to the president. He humorously asked how the president could still see through his dark glasses when it was already becoming dark outside. In response, Abacha pulled off his shades and set them aside, adding a lighthearted moment to the otherwise formal event.
After this, Alibaba signaled for the dancers to continue, but he soon noticed a shift in the mood of the event. DSS operatives, who had been observing him closely, started moving toward the backstage area. Alibaba, sensing potential trouble, chose not to go backstage as the agents had likely intended. Instead, he sat down directly in front of Abacha, who joked about how the comedian had skillfully evaded the security detail.
"As soon as I made the announcement, I saw DSS boys going to the backstage. When I saw this, I went to where Abacha was and sat down on the ground in front of him," Alibaba shared in his recount.
