Veteran Nollywood actor, Sylvester Madu has addressed the backlash surrounding his alleged involvement in the okirika (second-hand clothing) business, responding to public criticism and misconceptions about his stance on the trade.
Gistreel recalls that Sylvester Madu made headlines in 2023 after a viral video surfaced showing him arranging clothes on the floor of a local market in Enugu. The video quickly sparked speculation about financial struggles and prompted many to believe that Madu was involved in the okirika business to make ends meet. However, the actor has now clarified his position, revealing his thoughts on the matter in a recent online video.

In the video, Sylvester Madu responded directly to the criticism and backlash, particularly the widespread perception that okirika is a low-class business. The actor pointed out that the term "okirika" is often used pejoratively, but he believes it is unfair to diminish the value of second-hand goods. According to Madu, the widespread use of okirika items is not limited to just clothing, but extends to many areas of life. He highlighted that many people use items originating from okirika without realizing it, including everyday products such as cars, televisions, and even household appliances.
“They keep talking about okirika as if it’s one thing that originates from the gutter. 80% of Nigerians use okirika. The cars we drive are okirika. Some of the TVs in your house are okirika. Or you think it’s only clothes that are okirika?” Madu remarked in the video, challenging the public to stop pretending that they are above using second-hand goods.
Furthermore, Sylvester Madu took the opportunity to debunk rumors and misconceptions about his involvement in the okirika business. The actor clarified that he is not engaged in selling second-hand clothes and made it clear that his comments in a previous interview were misinterpreted. He explained that while he does not personally sell okirika items, he does not view the business as inherently negative and emphasized that it is a legitimate source of income for many individuals. Madu added, “I’ve made it clear that I’m not selling okirika and it’s not a bad business. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not condemning it, unlike what you guys heard in the interview.”
